About This Project

Make a beehive and bumble bee using recycled materials. This is a fun activity for spring, Earth Day, and learning about bees. This activity works best with a very large egg carton, like the ones from an 18, 30, or 60-count package.

Steps

Cut out the Beehive

Draw a large dome on the egg carton. Egg cartons can be tough to cut through. Ask an adult to help you cut it out if needed. Draw a smaller dome at the bottom of the beehive and ask an adult to help you cut it out to make the entrance.

Paint the beehive

Paint the beehive yellow and let it dry.

Make the Bee

Trace one large yellow circle and one large black circle (body of bee), a small yellow circle (head), a black heart (stinger), and 2 antennae on craft paper. Glue the heart to the back of the black circle to make the stinger. Cut the large yellow circle into strips and glue some of them onto the large black circle to make the stripes. Draw a face on the small yellow circle, glue the antennae to the back of the head, and glue the head onto the bee body.

Make the Flowers

Draw 4 hearts per flower on the colored craft paper (make 3 flowers, so you need 12 hearts). Draw small circles on the yellow paper to make the center of the flowers (you need 3 circles). Glue the base of two hearts together, then glue two more hearts on top and the yellow circle in the middle.
