Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of America's greatest leaders who changed our country forever through peaceful protests and powerful speeches. In the 1950s and 1960s, when many laws treated Black Americans unfairly, Dr. King led peaceful marches and gave inspiring speeches to help everyone understand that all people should be treated equally. His most famous speech, "I Have a Dream," shared his hope for a future where all children would grow up in a fair and friendly world. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work toward equality. Dr. King helped change many unfair laws through non-violent actions like boycotts (when people refuse to use a service until it becomes fair) and peaceful protests. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which helped end segregation on buses. He also helped organize the March on Washington, where 250,000 people gathered peacefully to support equal rights. Because of Dr. King's work, important laws were passed that made it illegal to treat people differently because of the color of their skin, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In this activity, we'll combine a history lesson with a STEAM challenge to build a small podium worthy of one of history's greatest speakers! Can you create a structure strong enough to hold Dr. King for his famous speech?
