About This Project

A 20–40 minutes craft for ages 3–6, using supplies you likely already have — Tape, Pom Poms, and Scissors.

    Make Butterfly Metamorphosis Craft

    Your creative buddy says:
    "I can't wait to make a project with you!"

    Step 1: Print and cut out the template pieces.

    May need grown-up help
    1. Print out the Butterfly Metamorphosis printable. 2. Cut out the shapes to use as a template. Ask an adult to help you with scissors. 3. Trace and cut out the pieces. You can cut the pieces out yourself, or ask an adult to help you.

    Step 2: Make the caterpillar.

    1. Glue the brown branch to one side of the clothespin. 2. Glue the pom-poms to the other side of the clothespin. 3. Set aside to dry.

    Step 3: Color the butterfly wings.

    1. Tape the two butterfly wings together in the middle. 2. Color the wings!

    Step 4: Glue the leaf and chrysalis to the butterfly.

    1. Glue the brown chrysalis and the green leaf to the back of the butterfly. 2. Line up the shape of the wings together.

    Step 5: Color the leaf and chrysalis.

    1. Color the leaf using your green marker and glue the egg on. 2. Color horizontal lines on the chrysalis using your brown marker. Look at the picture of the finished chrysalis for reference.

    Step 6: Show the egg stage.

    1. Fold the butterfly in half. 2. Use the brown side of the clothespin to clip to the leaf like a branch.

    Step 7: Show the caterpillar stage.

    1. Turn the clothespin over to the caterpillar side. 2. Clip onto the leaf.

    Step 8: Show the chrysalis stage.

    1. Remove the clothespin. 2. Wrap the chrysalis around the caterpillar.

    Step 9: Show the butterfly stage.

    1. Open the wings up. 2. Pin the clothespin in the middle of the wings.

    Clean up

    Put things away so your space is tidy for next time.
