Fireworks Headband

Celebrate New Years Eve, the Fourth of July, or any special day with this bright and colorful fireworks headband. Twisted pipecleaners and foam stickers combine with any plain headband to bring a bang to any party ensemble.

About This Project

A 15–30 minutes craft for ages 5–10, using supplies you likely already have — Headbands, Stickers, and Pipe Cleaners.

Step 1: Twist pipe cleaners around a pen or pencil

For each firework, you'll need to twist a pipe cleaner around a pencil or other round object. The tighter you wrap, the twistier your coil will be. Tight coils tend to stand upright better than floppy loose ones. Wrapping around several different objects will give your fireworks unique looks. For our headband, we wrapped three pipe cleaners around a pencil.

Step 2: Add a foam sticker

After you've wrapped your pipe cleaner tightly, remove it from the pencil and bend one end up. Stick a foam sticker to the end. We loved the way our shiny star stickers looked. We also had some snowflake stickers that we thought looked like exploding fireworks. Stick the sticker to the end of your pipe cleaner.

Step 3: Make a sticker + pipecleaner sandwich

To prevent the sticky side of the sticker from getting hair, dirt, or other gunk stuck to it, we recommend saving the sticker paper and sandwiching the pipecleaner between the sticky sticker and it's paper. If you don't like the look of the paper on the back side, you can also take two of the same foam sticker and use them as the "bread" of the sandwich with the pipe cleaner in between.

Step 4: Attach to the headband

Wrap the end without a sticker tightly around the headband. Tuck the loose end up so it doesn't poke you in the head while wearing it.

Step 5: Repeat with thicker objects

For different looks, wrap different objects. We wrapped a fat marker, two of our fingers, and a thick tube of paint to get the different varieties of fireworks on our headband.

Step 6: Make zig zag fireworks

Instead of wrapping, you can also make zig zag fireworks. Simply bend the pipe cleaner in a Z shape back and forth. Attach it tot he headband in the same way as twisty fireworks.

Step 7: Wear it with pride

Once you've added 7-10 fireworks, it's time to show off your creation!
