Make Groundhog Paper Bag Puppet

Messy Mode

Cut a strip off the bottom

Use your ruler to measure a 1" strip across the bottom of your bag. Cut in a nice straight line through all the layers of your bag at once. We'll use this strip to make your groundhog's ears.

Cut the ears

Draw a half-circle the height of the strip you just cut. Cut out through all layers. Now you have two ears exactly the same size. If you cut in a place that had more than two layers and have extra ears, you can throw them away.

Glue on the ears

Use a glue stick or white glue to attach the ears to the back of the paper bag.

Cut a green strip for grass

Use your ruler to measure the width of your bag and how high you want your grass to be. Cut a rectangle to match your measurements from the green paper.

Fringe your grass

Use your scissors to cut thin strips into the green paper to make it look like grass. Be careful not to cut all the way through. The next step is much easier if the grass stays as one long strip.

Glue on the grass

Glue on your grass. Only add glue to the bottom of your grass where all the fringe is still connected. This will let the grass blow in the breeze.

Make the teeth

Use your ruler to measure a square about 1-inch long on all sides. Cut it out, then cut a strip up the middle to make two teeth.

Glue on the teeth and eyes

Glue the teeth to the bottom of the paper bag's flap. Glue the eyes on to the center of the flap.

Draw nose and whiskers

Finish the groundhog's face by adding a nose and whiskers with a marker.

Draw front paws

Use your marker to draw two front legs for your groundhog.

Put on a show

Use your puppet to tell the story of groundhog day!
