About This Project

A 20–40 minutes craft for ages 3–8, using supplies you likely already have — Staplers, Pom Poms, and Scissors.

Step 1: Paint your paper plate brown.

May need grown-up help

First, put some newspaper on your table to keep it clean. Pinch a soft pompom with a clothespin to make a special paintbrush. Put your paper plate upside down on the newspaper. Squeeze out some brown paint. Use your pompom brush to paint the whole bottom of the plate brown. Ask a grown-up for help if you need it. Let the plate dry completely.

Step 2: Cut out your deer's parts using the template.

Get the deer craft template from the link. Ask a grown-up to help you print it. Use the template to cut out the deer's head, tail, nose, and antlers from construction paper. You can choose to make antlers or not, depending on if you want a boy or girl deer. We used brown paper for the head and tail, black for the nose, and gray for the antlers.

Step 3: Make your plate into a cone shape.

Once your painted plate is dry, cut a straight line from the edge of the plate to the middle. Carefully overlap the two sides of the cut plate a little bit. Use the stapler to put a couple of staples where the sides overlap. This will make your plate look like a little cone, which will be the deer's body.

Step 4: Glue the deer's face and tail onto its body.

Now, use a glue stick to put the nose and antlers (if you chose to make them) onto the deer's head. Use markers to draw sleepy eyes and any other details you like on the deer's face. Then, glue the deer's head onto the cone-shaped plate, right over the cut line, a little bit to the side. Last, glue the tail onto the back of the plate so it looks like it's curling around the deer's body, with the tip pointing towards its head.

Step 5: Add white spots and rosy cheeks to your deer.

For a special touch, put a little white paint on some newspaper. Use a Q-tip to make small white dots on the deer's back and the top of its head. You can also make white stripes on the underside of the tail, just like real deer have. If you want, use a pink crayon or a little pink paint to give your deer rosy cheeks.
