About This Project

A 5–10 minutes craft for ages 5–12, using supplies you likely already have — Double-Sided Tape, Pens, and Coffee Filters.

GlueStick supports kids from setup to cleanup. After they choose a project, we guide them through gathering the supplies, making it, and cleaning up when they're done. We'll even help them share it safely with trusted family and friends.

Ad-free and kid-safe library — designed by a mom who wants kids to explore and create independently.

    Make "Feather" Pen

    Your creative buddy says:
"Let's stick together and make this one!"

    Step 1: Make the "feathers"

Fold two coffee filters in half. Cut four identical ovals out of the stack.

Step 2: Tape the pen to the feathers

Next, place the pencil or pen on one oval, making sure enough hangs out the bottom for your hand to hold the finished quill. If you put the pencil a little off center it will look more natural. Tape it in place using double stick tape. If you don't have double stick tape, you could also use glue. Run the tape along the shaft of the pencil, then sandwich it between the second coffee filter oval. Now tape the other two layers of coffee filter to the pen or pencil–you should have a sandwich like this: filter, filter, pen, filter, filter.

    Step 3: Trim the feather

If you want, trim the coffee filter oval into a prettier shape. Then, cut barbs into the feather. Cut them at an angle and don’t go too deep. It’s like making paper grass! Do both sides and (gently!) rough them up a little.
